WHAT IS LYMPHEDEMA?

Lymphedema is a term used to describe the accumulation of protein-rich fluid (called lymph) in a particular part of the body, resulting in swelling of the affected area.  Lymphedema occurs either because the lymphatic system isn't working properly, or there is simply too much fluid for a normal lymphatic system to process.

The lymphatic system is made up of a network of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes and other lymph tissue.  It forms part of both the circulatory and immune systems and is essential for both the transport of lymph fluid and the body's immune function.

Lymphedema is classified as either primary or secondary.  Primary lymphedema occurs as a result of congenital abnormalities of the lymphatic system.  Symptoms may be present from birth or appear later in life.  Secondary lymphedema is much more common and is the result of surgery or is a side effect of radiation therapy for cancer.  Secondary forms may also occur after injury, scarring, trauma, or infection of the lymphatic system.

• STAGE 1: No swelling, but subtle symptoms such as tight skin and heaviness.

• STAGE 2: More swelling which does not improve with elevation. The affected area is hard and larger than Stage 1.

• STAGE 3: Much more swelling than stage 2. Might be so severe you cannot lift or move your arm or leg. The fluid can leak from the skin and blister.
